Introduction to Scouting
Lieutenant-General Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement after recognising the value of responsibility, initiative, and outdoor learning for young people.
Following the experimental Brownsea Island camp in 1907 and the publication of Scouting for Boys in 1908, Scouting spread rapidly across Britain — including Lincoln.

Early Scouting in Lincoln
Before Lincoln District (Pre-1912)
Before the official formation of Lincoln District in 1912, several independent Scout troops and patrols had already emerged across the city.
These early groups were often linked to:
- Churches
- Schools
- Local communities
- Volunteers and former servicemen
Featured Groups Section
Lindum Pioneers
One of the earliest identified Scout groups in Lincoln, operating before 1912.
Newland
Believed to have been organised around the Newland community area.
Orion
An early troop whose name reflects the independent identity of early Scout patrols.
Hydra
Referenced in later recollections, representing the informal growth of Scouting in Lincoln.
Priory
Likely associated with the Priory area and local parish communities.
Formation of Lincoln District – 29 August 1912
Lincoln District was officially formed to coordinate and support the growing number of Scout troops across the city.
The District introduced:
- Shared leadership
- Volunteer support
- Coordinated activities
- Sustainable development for local Scouting
This marked the beginning of organised District Scouting in Lincoln.
